Qld: Recycled water project sunk
Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says a plan to send Brisbane's recycled water to theDarling Downs has been killed off by the federal government's refusal to put up any money.
Darling Downs group Vision 2000 has proposed a pipeline to take recycled water fromBrisbane to the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley to irrigate farms.
Mr BEATTIE says Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has refused to fund a feasibility studyand capital costs -- on the basis that the project appears costly and largely for privatebenefit.
The Premier says the project is of national significance, and his government is puttingnearly $600,000 into studies for it.
He says private funding is now the only hope for the project, estimated to cost $700 million.
