Ath: Kenya carjackers rob marathon man Tergat
NAIROBI, Aug 19 Reuters - Kenyan marathon runner Paul Tergat said he had a fortunate
escape from armed carjackers who held up his driver and stole his vehicle near the world
record holder's Nairobi home, a week before he flies to the Olympics.
"I have not been able to sleep at all since I am wondering what the motive of the attack
might be," Tergat said today after describing the previous evening's incident.
"Initially I was supposed to accompany the driver but I changed my mind at the last
minute," he said.
But Tergat said he would not let it disrupt preparations for the Athens Games marathon
on August 29, in which he is favourite.
"I am focused and the incident will not in any way affect me," he said.
Police could not immediately confirm the theft.
Tergat said four thieves robbed his driver and a passenger and held them for three
hours in a nearby forest before setting them free and driving off in the four-wheel drive
vehicle.
