Fed: Tollway operators face fines for excessive toll hikes

Tollway operators could be fined up to $10 million if they use the GST as an excuse
to excessively jack up prices.

Financial Services Minister JOE HOCKEY says the introduction of the new tax system
in July is likely to result in cost savings for many toll operators, which should be passed
on to motorists.

Tollway operators claim the introduction of the GST will result in typical tolls of
$2.50 rising to $2.75, an amount that requires a combination of four coins.
